Goals the Last Full Week of April

As far as word count is concerned, I had a fair week last week.  I managed to pull down 6047 out of 6000 words.  Not bad.

Some of my goals have been rearranged for me.  One of the editors I’ve been courting is leaving publishing so the manuscript she suggested I work on has been de-prioritized.  I still plan to write it — I pitched it to her because I really like the idea.  But other things are scooting up the priority list since I no longer have an editor waiting for this particular piece.

I also had another contract come along so that switches things around a bit but in a very good way.

Here are my goals:

Weekly Goals:

  • 5 posts for One Writer’s Journey.  In progress.
  • 2 reviews on the Bookshelf.  Done.
  • 1 post for PrayPower.  Done.
  • Write my posts for the Church blog.  Done.

Goals with Deadlines (some are my deadlines, some are my editors’ deadlines):

  • Rewrite the piece that I’m working on for an educational publisher.  My deadline:  4/27.  Done.
  • Work on the middle grade. I want to have the first chapter done for critique at the retreat.  Deadline: 4/27.  Done.
  • Rough out the activities for Education.com.  Deadline:  5/8  Done.
  • Write next piece for the Muffin, the WOW blog.  Deadline: 5/11 (will be posted 5/12).  In progress.
  • Solicit my last interviews for the next CW article in my rotation.  Deadline:  5/15.  In progress.
  • Solicit interviews for the CW piece after that.  Deadline:  6/15.

Non-Deadline Goals:

  • Get a fiction picture book back out.
  • Get a nonfiction picture book back out.
  • Get a chapter book back out.
  • Rewrite and submit a leveled reader.
  • Do some more research on my next nonfiction picture book.
  • Get an essay on writing back out.
  • Rewrite the picture book I had critiqued.
  • Do some more work on a PiBoIdMo idea.
  • Work on my agent research.
  • Rough submissions for Blue Mountain cards.
  • Keep working on my web site.

Goals as We Blow Through April

Anyone who lives in the Midwest gets the title.  Anyone who doesn’t can just be glad that they’re missing out on our windy weather.

Deadlines and rewrite requests do amazing things for your word count.  Last week I didn’t quite make my goal (6000 words/week).  This week I surpassed it with 8934 words.  That’s a whole lot of blog posts and two articles.  Yes, I worked on my middle grade novel but didn’t count that on this weeks word count.  I’ll count it when the chapter is done.

What are my goals for this week?

Weekly Goals:

  • 5 posts for One Writer’s Journey.  Done.

My deadline:  4/20.  In progress.
  • Solicit my last interviews for the next CW article in my rotation.  Deadline:  5/15.  In progress.
  • Write the interview questions and start soliciting interviews for the CW piece after that.  Deadline:  6/15.

Non-Deadline Goals:

  • Get a picture book back out.
  • Work on the middle grade. Go over the Plot Whisperer notes that I originally made.  Also story board the manuscript.

Goals as We Head into April

Goals are wonky things at the moment.  Lots of writing projects coming in, going out and some coming back for rewrites.  That means that the list, which serves as my reminder, changes throughout the week.

Lot’s of prewriting done on several different projects this past week but in spite of that I managed to pull down 6526 words.  Not too shabby but I wish I had managed a bit more than that.

Weekly Goals:

  • 5 posts for One Writer’s Journey.  In progress.
  • 2 reviews on the Bookshelf.  Done.
  • 1 post for PrayPower.  In progress.
  • Write my posts for the Church blog.  Done!

Goals with Deadlines (some are my deadlines, some are my editors’ deadlines):

  • Rewrite draft of reluctant reader.  Deadline (sort of mine):  4/6.  Done!
  • Collect interviews to rewrite CW piece with some recommendations from my editor. Deadline:  4/6.  Interviews solicited – just waiting.
  • Blog post for the Muffin.  Deadline:  4/13.  (Publication date: 4/14)  Done.
  • Solicit interviews for the next CW article in my rotation.   Deadline: 4/15. Interviews solicited – just waiting.
  • Solicit interview for the CW piece after that.  Deadline:  5/15.

Non-Deadline Goals:

  • Get a picture book back out.
  • Work on the middle grade. Go over the Plot Whisperer notes that I originally made.  Also story board the manuscript.

Goals — Yikes! How’d It Get to Be Spring Break?

I made it through all of last weeks deadlines.  Not surprisingly, it did wondrous things to my word count.  I made 6000 words and blew right past it for a total of 8836 words.  I think I also fried myself.  I had several free hours Saturday and I wasn’t even tempted to write.  I played Wii and read.

This week is our Spring Break so I’m going to try for 6000 words but don’t hold your breath.  So far, I have zero (that’s 0) deadlines this week and that may be a really good thing!  That said, I am going to create a few for myself.  But I also have to get my son ready for a school trip so that will mean packing and running around.  Still, I’ll have 3 days after he leaves — one of which will be spent baking.  Oh, the horror!

What will I accomplish?  Who knows!   Here are my goals.

Weekly Goals:

  • 5 posts for One Writer’s Journey. Done!
  • 2 reviews on the Bookshelf.  Done!
  • 1 post for PrayPower.  Done!
  • Write my posts for the Church blog.  Done!

Goals with Deadlines (some are my deadlines, some are my editors’ deadlines):

  • Rewrite pitch for the education job.  I got some seriously solid feedback and am eager to see where it takes me.  Deadline:  3/23.  Done!
  • Pull together a pitch for Education.com.  Deadline:  3/23.  In progress.
  • Solicit interviews for the next CW article in my rotation.   Deadline: 4/15.   In progress.
  • Solicit interview for the CW piece after that.  Deadline:  5/15.

Non-Deadline Goals:

  • Rewrite and submit a leveled reader.
  • Start researching my next nonfiction picture book.
  • Get an essay on writing back out.
  • Rewrite the picture book I had critiqued.
  • Do some more work on a PiBoIdMo idea.
  • Work on my agent research.
  • Rough submissions for Blue Mountain cards.
  • Keep working on my web site.
  • Work on the middle grade. Go over the Plot Whisperer notes that I originally made.  Also story board the manuscript.

Writing Goals with a Teenager in the House

Last week, my wee one turned 13.  Thirteen.  13.  Of course, he also announced that as a teen it is now his duty to argue with everything we say.  Joy!

Last week I also spent a great deal of time researching various projects.  Research does not mean writing so my word count didn’t quite meet my goal.  I only managed 5311 words, almost 700 words short of my 6000 word goal.  As I still have scads of research to do, I’ll have to try to do better.

With no further ado, here are my goals.

  • Read and digest the comments from my reluctant reader editor and come up with a new pitch.  Deadline:  3/9.  In progress.
  • Review of book on journaling.  Deadline: 3/12.  In progress.
  • I got comments from my critique group, now I need to rewrite the  YA pages that I’m going to workshop at a retreat this spring. Deadline:  3/15.  In progress.
  • Solicit interviews for my next CW article.  Deadline:  3/15.  In progress.
  • Advent submissions for Thriving Family Magazine’s calendar pages.  Deadline:  3/15.
  • Solicit interviews for the following CW article in my rotation.   Deadline: 4/15.  In progress.

Non-Deadline Goals:

  • Pull together a pitch for Education.com.**

Goals for this Week of President’s Day

Everyone is home today so this is going to be fairly quick.  They have one Boy Scout project to do and then we’re going to have a quiet family day.  I’ll be back at work tomorrow.

Last week was busy — I accepted a new job and applied for another.  All of this means lots and lots of writing.  I managed 6477 word, just over my goal of 6000.  With all of that writing, I finished and submitted nothing.  That’s going to have to change this week since I have a deadline.

Weekly Goals:

  • 5 posts for One Writer’s Journey. Done!
  • 2 reviews on the Bookshelf.  Done!
  • 1 post for PrayPower.  Done!
  • Write my posts for the Church blog.  Done!

Goals with Deadlines:

  • Write and submit 11 activities for Education.com.  Deadline: 2/22.  I’ve written everything up and done the activities.  Next — photos!   Done!
  • Edit next Mo Scribbles newsletter.  Deadline:  2/24.  Done!
  • Rough and rewrite my next article for WOW.  Deadline:  2/27.  In progress.
  • Write my next Muffin post.  Deadline:  3/4.
  • Solicit interviews for my next CW article.  Deadline:  3/15.  In progress.
  • Write the interview questions for the 2nd CW article in my rotation.   Due: 4/15.

Non-Deadline Goals:

  • Rewrite the  YA chapter that I’m going to workshop at a retreat this spring.*  Done!
  • Rewrite and submit a leveled reader.*

Goals During Valentine’s Week

Filed under: Uncategorized — suebe @ 5:12 pm
Tags: , , ,

Valentine’s Day is pretty low-key around here, especially this year.  We are paying off the last of the  bills to do with the new bathroom and gearing up to redo the family room.  We are going to make dinner at home and just relax.  Following last week, that sounds really, really good.

Last week was busy, but I got a lot of writing done and added a few new assignments to my list.  I pulled down 6121 words out of 6000.  Woohoo!   That’s pretty impressive given that two of my big projects are still in the reading and planning stage and a third is less than 100 words long.  When something is that short, you can write it from scratch and then completely rewrite it again with very little impact on your word count.  Oh, well.  The important thing is that it turned out EXCELLENT and will be going out to the editor this week.

Speaking of this week, here are my goals:

Weekly Goals (the ones that come up each and every week):

  • 5 posts for One Writer’s Journey.  Done!
  • 1 review on the Bookshelf.  Done!
  • 1 post for PrayPower.  Done!
  • Write my posts for the Church blog.  Done!

Goals with Deadlines:

  • Pitch to WOW!  Deadline:  2/15  Done!
  • Critique manuscript.  Deadline:  2/17.  Done!
  • Write and submit 11 activities for Education.com.  Deadline: 2/22.  In progress.
  • Finish researching and rough my next article for WOW.  I may need to interview people and the sooner I figure this out, the better. Deadline:  2/27.  In progress.
  • Write my next Muffin post.  Deadline:  3/4.
  • Come up with interview questions and solicit interviews for my next CW article.  Deadline:  3/15.  In progress.

Non-Deadline Goals:

  • Rewrite and submit a leveled reader.*
  • Rewrite the  YA chapter that I’m going to workshop at a retreat this spring.

Goals Post-Super Bowl and Keeping Your Blog Going when You Aren’t at Your Desk

Not my best week last week.  Of course, a big part of that involved bed rest.  Blah.  My son shared his virus.  I haven’t been sick like that in well over a year — the kind where you stay in bed because you have no choice.  Still, I did emerge on Wednesday and managed to get a little bit done — only 3808 words this week.  Well below my 6000 word goal.  Ah, well.

But I did manage to keep my blog going throughout the week.  How?  By using the Scheduling feature.  I had to start doing this for the Muffin and expanded it to my own personal goal.  When I write a post, instead of publishing it, I can schedule it to post at some date in the future.  Very, very useful.

I’ve got a lot almost done so I should be able to check some of my goals off in fairly short order this week.

Weekly Goals (these are my must-dos for the week):

  • 5 posts for One Writer’s Journey.  Done!
  • 1 review on the Bookshelf.  Done!
  • 1 post for PrayPower.  Done!
  • Write my posts for the Church blog.  Done!

Goals with Deadlines:

  • Pitch to WOW!  Deadline:  2/15  In progress.
  • Write my next Muffin post.  Deadline:  2/18.  In progress.
  • Write and submit 11 activities for Education.com.  Deadline: 2/22.
  • Rough my next article for WOW.  This will help me ping people with pertinent questions.  Deadline:  2/27.
  • Come up with interview questions and solicit interviews for my next CW article.  Deadline:  3/15.

Non-Deadline Goals:

  • *Pitch some ideas to a nonfiction editor.  Done!
  • *Finish the cookbook proposal and get it out.  Done!
  • Get an essay on writing back out.
  • Rewrite the picture book I had critiqued.
  • Do some more work on a PiBoIdMo idea.
  • Work on my agent research.
  • Rough submissions for Blue Mountain cards.
  • Keep working on my web site.
  • Work up some ideas for leveled readers.
  • Work on the middle grade. Go over the Plot Whisperer notes that I originally made.
  • Pull out the YA that I’m going to workshop at a retreat this spring.
