Campbell and Campbell for Writers.

Campbell and Campbell for Writers.

you’ve been reading this blog for any length of time, you’ve probably read something about Joseph Campbell.  Campbell studied mythology and religion.  In his work, he looked for common elements between the myths and stories that people have told for hundreds of years.  Writers need to know about Campbell and his work because the structures found in myth are found in the stories we create even today.

Christopher Vogler writes about this in The Writer’s Journey.  In his book, you can read about characters such as heros and mentors.  You can see how they came into play in Star Wars and other popular works.  You can also learn how to use this in your own work.

If you want to hear about mythology from Campbell himself, I’ve just discovered a Spotify playlist that contains several of his lectures divided into something like 590 “songs.”  It looks like these songs are actually 46 lectures broken into bite sized chunks.  Topics range from the Heroe’s Journey (yay) to James Joyce (ugh). Take a look and hear this influential author speak for himself.
