Head Shot: What to Wear for a Professional Photo

Head shotThis Saturday, I’m having a professional photo taken at the Missouri SCBWI (Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators) Conference.  I’ll admit — I’m a bit panicky.  I loathe getting my picture taken.  Loathe.  Heck, I don’t even know what to wear.  Obviously, gold lame is out but what would be good?  Fortuantely, I’m not particularly shy so I e-mailed the photographer, Sharon Keeling Davis.  Here are her tips for a good portrait.

“I recommend solid, dark colors. Patterns can be distracting, and light colors can make you look larger than you really are. Long sleeves tend to be the most flattering, particularly if you’re not confident about your arms. Nothing below the waist will show, so only the shirt matters.

“For style choices like hair, makeup and jewelry, give some thought to the image you want to project–professional, friendly, edgy, etc. Anything can look good from completely natural to heavily made up, but I do recommend spending some time on your hair. I can adjust a lot of things in retouching, but hair is one of the most difficult things to change.”

This was direction enough to head off to Kohls.  When Sharon sends me the finished photo, I’ll share it with all of you and explain my jewelry choices.  I actually knew what jewelry I wanted to wear before I figured anything else out.

Do any of you have a professional head shot?  If so, how did you decide what to wear?

  1. Thanks for passing that information along, Sue! You can also take a look at head shot photos from last year’s Ozarks Romance Authors conference and form your own opinions about what looks best.

  2. Thanks for the advice, Sue! I will (sadly) be missing the conference this year, but I definitely need a professional head shot. I’ll be saving this blog, so I can refer to it when I need it. Have a great weekend!

    • Take a look at her photos in the link. As much as I like some of the ones where the subject wears a white blouse, the dark solids definitely take the cake. We’ll miss you Saturday!
