This trailer really grabbed my attention, because it does so many things so well. It is for Gene Barretta’s new picture book bio, Timeless Thomas.
One of the first things that caught my attention was the great match between the soundtrack and the subject. The music used in this trailer was actually recorded by Edison Sound Recordings. How perfect is that?
No, your match doesn’t have to be that good, but do try. Recently I watched a trailer of a novel that was supposed to be set in one culture and the music was from another. Honestly, I can’t even tell you what the book was about because I was completely thrown by that disconnect. No, it wouldn’t have that effect on everyone but do pick your music carefully.
Barretta’s trailer alternates between illustrations from the book and kids enjoying the continued benefits of Edison’s inventions.
For anyone whose already read Gene Barretta’s bio of Ben Franklin, Now and Ben, you know this is the feel of the book itself. While focusing on the inventor in question, Barretta makes the information current and meaningful to kids today.
But I also think this is a great idea for a trailer. Somehow link the book to real kids, your actual audience.
Just something to noodle over as you consider how to promote your work . . .
One more thought — because this one does such a great job of this as well.
