Do You Have a Five Year Plan?

Filed under: Uncategorized — suebe @ 1:43 am

My version of a five-year-plan would be just this complex.

“Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.”
― Theodore Roosevelt

I’ve heard various writers say that you need a five year plan.  Seriously?

When I make a plan, I make a plan worthy of a military commander.  Its one of those delightful traits I get from my father who would schedule our long-distance drive from St. Louis, Missouri to Alpine, Texas down to the minute.  I kid you not.  There is no way that I can make an accurate five year plan.  There are just too many variables.

“No, no, no,” I hear you saying.  “That’s not necessary.  You just need to know where you want to be in five years.  Do you still want to be writing how-tos or do you want to be writing books.”

Silly!   That’s not a plan.  That’s just knowing what I want.  ::insert enormous eye roll::

Do you know where you want to be in five years?  What steps have you already taken this year to get there?  What can you do in the 6+ months that remain?

I would like to have a book out (who wouldn’t?) but can’t really set that as a goal.  After all, I can’t make someone buy a book, but I can put my work out there.

That means I need to get some of these book manuscripts into circulation.  I’d like to have 6 circulating by year’s end.  I have two that are 100% ready to go out.  I have to create a series proposal to accompany a third.  I have another that may be ready — I haven’t looked at it in a while and want to read through it.  And I have two more that just need a bit more work.

If I count right, that’s 6 book manuscripts.  No, I probably won’t get it done in the next few weeks.  Something about my son being off school.  Right now I’m meeting deadlines and getting ready for a retreat this fall.  But I’ll start submitting when he goes back to school.

Do you have a larger goal that you’re working towards?

  1. Excellent post. You are dead on. We can all say what we want… A Newberry Award winning book… but what we really need to do is the hard work, the day to day steps that will get us closer to the opportunity.
