One of the things that I love most about the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators is the financial support it gives its membership. There are a large number of grants available to both new and experienced authors. You can see the complete list here.
Check out this YouTube video of author Jane Yolen discussing an all-new grant for mid-list authors.
The Jane Yolen Mid-List Author grant winner is Mary K. Whittington of Washington State. Mary is a writing buddy of mine who had recently suffered a stroke. Not that that has brought her writing to a halt. Mary is half way through writing a new novel using voice recognition software. Jane calls Mary her hero, and hopes the grant helps her get that novel finished.
Honor grants have also been given to Ann Whitford Paul and Barbara Diamond Golden.
Jane’s concern, and the reason for establishing the grant, is that the mid-list has long been the backbone of the publishing industry. Sure, a blockbuster brings money in by the basket full but blockbusters are few and far between. To help keep mid-list authors going until that next sale, Jane has established this grant.
Thank you for all you do for the writing community, Jane!
