Friday: Kids and Reading

reading3Sometimes during the school year the articles will start fluttering around — “How to Encourage Your Child to Read,” “Why Kids Today Don’t Read,” etc.

My son’s school must be doing something right.  Today, I saw two different kids walking down the sidewalk reading, glancing up so that they wouldn’t trip over anything, and then going back to their reading.

The other day I had to practically take the book he was reading out of my son’s hands so that he would come set the dinner table.

I don’t know what the two walkers were reading, but my son had one of the Diary of a Whimpy Kid books.  I also found him flipping through the Melvin Beederman book that I checked out from the library.

Apparently, if you want this particular kid to read, give him something funny.  Too bad.  Everything in their reading book seems to be oh so serious.  Could that be part of the problem?
