Researching a city

newspaperDetails make your story real.  This is no less true for contemporary fiction than it is for fantasy or historic fiction.  But how much research do you put into your contemporary stories?

Information for contemporary fiction can be hard to come by, especially if city web sites aren’t updated regularly.   But you can check out the newspaper headlines for a wide variety of cities at Newseum.

Select the correct map (North America, Asia, Europe, etc.) and then move the cursor over the dot for the appropriate city.  The local newspaper’s front page will come up.  Double click the city location to select the newspaper for closer inspection.

When I checked out Missouri, I was surprised to find St. Louis missing but Springfield and Jefferson City are both on the map.

Why not see what you can see?
